The China Knowledge Network hosted an insightful discussion led by esteemed speakers Prof.dr. Christian Goebel of University of Vienna and Leiden University’s Ass.prof.dr. Carwyn Morris.

In this session, our two speakers delved into the intricacies of online activism within the context of China's tightly controlled digital landscape. Drawing onrecent incidents and historical precedents, they addressed key questions that shape our understanding of online activism in China:

  • Is there still room for online activism given censorship?
  • How effective is the Chinese firewall in suppressing dissent?
  • How safe are Chinese social media platforms for activists?
  • How secretive does one need to be, both inside and outside China?
  • How does the Chinese diaspora navigate censorship and control from mainland China?

This session offered valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by activists operating in China's digital realm.
